PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team will host Davis & Elkins for a 10-inning game, Sunday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Panthers return 17 players from last year's roster, with the addition of three freshman and two transfers.
Pitt bolstered its pitching rotation over the summer with the additions of Julia Grobman and Adriana Romano. Grobman joins the Panthers pitching staff from Yale, making four starts inside the circle for the Bulldogs, totaling 25 strikeouts and a 3.82 ERA in 29.1 innings of work. Romano spent her freshman season at Siena, where she was the ace of the staff, going 11-6 with a 2.45 ERA and recording 139 strikeouts in 2022.
Highlighting the returnees for Pitt are graduate student Yvonne Whaley and redshirt sophomore Dani Drogemuller. Last season, Whaley earned All-ACC Third Team recognition after finishing her first season with Pitt recording a team-high .344 batting average as the leadoff hitter.
Drogemuller is coming off an impressive season where she finished sixth in the ACC with 147 strikeouts, becoming the third pitcher since 2014 to record 100+ strikeouts in a season at Pitt.
Junior Cami Compson and senior Kat Rodriguez are also among the key players returning this season. Compson finished third on the squad with a .274 batting average and a team-best seven home runs. Rodriguez looks to make an impact after sitting out last due to the NCAA transfer rules.
The Panthers will host four play dates and play seven games total at Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex over the next three weeks. The team will welcome St. Francis (Oct. 2), Glenville State (Oct. 8), and Kent State (Oct. 9) to the venue this fall season.
