PITTSBURGH – Junior Bertin Jacquesson tallied three points (1 goal, 1 assist), while Valentin Noel and Lucas Rosa also found the back of the net as the seventh-ranked Pitt Panthers posted a dominating 3-0 win over No. 6 West Virginia Monday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Pitt opened the season with back-to-back wins over top-10 ranked opponents for the first time in program history and have now posted eight wins over teams ranked in the top 10 of the national poll in the past three seasons.
Pitt struck first at the 11:02 mark as Valentin Noel scored his second goal of the season. Jacquesson sent a long cross through the box from the right wing where a streaking Noel slipped behind the West Virginia defense to the back post where he deposited the one bounce pass into the back of the net.
The Panthers continued on the attack and doubled up there lead with a rebound goal at the 16:44 mark. A terrific one-two connection in the middle of the box led to a flick by Luis Sahmkow past the diving WVU keeper. A West Virginia defender pushed the rolling shot off the line but the clear attempt hit the right post and sent the ball back to the middle of the field where Lucas Rosa blasted the shot by a sprawling pair of Mountaineers for a 2-0 lead in the opening 17 minutes of action.
Jacquesson gathered a clearing pass near midfield and pushed by a chasing defender into the right corner of the 18 before uncorking a right foot low burner into the left corner of the net for a 3-0 advantage at the 29:54 mark.
The Mountaineers came out strong in the second half generating a scoring opportunity in the 46th minute, Pitt goalkeeper Joe van der Sar made an outstanding save deflecting a WVU header from the six to the right post where Jackson Walti cleared to the sideline to stymie the early second half WVU scoring opportunity.
van der Sar maintained the clean sheet with another impressive stop in the 61st minute. The senior keeper used all of his 6-1 frame to snag a one-touch chip from eight yards out.
Pitt controlled play over the remainder of the contest with the defense remaining stout against the West Virginia counter. van der Sar recorded five saves on the night for his first career shutout.
The Panthers return to action Friday, Sept. 2 with a road trip to Huntington, W.V., to face No. 14 Marshall in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
