PITTSBURGH – Head Coach Randy Waldrum and the women's soccer team added another transfer to its 2022 squad with the addition of forward Samiah Phiri.
Phiri played her first collegiate season at Oklahoma State last year and enters as a sophomore. She is immediately eligible for the upcoming fall season.
"We are thrilled to add Samiah into our team," said associate head coach Ben Waldrum. "Samiah will give us a different dimension in our attacking options. She has the size, frame, and athleticism to play as a target combined with a high-level soccer IQ and technical ability to contribute in multiple positions."
As a freshman, Phiri finished tied for fourth on the Oklahoma State squad in points with six, scoring two goals and tallying two assists. She entered in all 18 games in 2021, starting in five, and finished the season with 16 shots, five shots on goal and a game-winner in 643 minutes of action.
Prior to Oklahoma State, Phiri starred at FC Dallas, where she was the club's leading scorer. She helped lead the team to a third-place finish in the 2019 DA Cup. Her rankings going into college included No. 44 on the IMG Academy 150 List and a four-star recruit via TopDrawerSoccer. She was ranked No. 8 in the Texas Regional and No. 14 nationally at the forward position.
"Throughout her youth career and even transitioning into the college game last season, Samiah has shown the ability create and score goals," Waldrum stated. "I believe she will be a great fit for our style and contribute at a high level for us right away."
From Irving, Texas, Phiri attended MacArthur High School.
Phiri adds depth to an experienced forward group that includes seniors Amanda West and Leah Pais and sophomore Sarah Schupansky. All three combined for 21 goals, 12 assists and 54 points last year.
