MIAMI – Pitt baseball (22-16, 10-10) beat No. 4 Miami (31-9, 16-5) 9-4 Sunday afternoon at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. The victory was the Panther's fifth against a top-five team in April (two each against then-No. 5 Louisville and then-No. 5 Virginia), most in a single-season in program history.
Â
Tatem Levins snagged Pitt the lead in the game's opening frame, blasting a one-out solo homer to left field.
Â
The Panthers plated five runs in the next inning. Tommy Tavarez led off with a single to centerfield, and Josh Overbeek followed with a walk. With one out Jordan Anderson brought home Tavarez with a single up the middle. Dom Popa also notched a single up the middle to knock in Overbeek. With two outs, Levins hit a second homer to right field, his 13th of the season.
Â
The Hurricanes got on the board in the fourth inning with a one-out solo homer to left field.
Â
Pitt grew their lead in the sixth inning. Overbeek walked with one out and went to third base on a single through the right side from Brock Franks. Both would score on another RBI-single from Anderson as the Hurricanes' right fielder made an error for Franks to get home from first base.
Â
The Panthers added an insurance run in the ninth inning. With two outs, Bryce Hulett walked and went to second base on a wild pitch. After a walk from Tavarez, a passed ball put both in scoring position. Overbeek was able to beat out a throw to first base for an RBI-infield single to second base.
The Panthers return to action next weekend at home with a three-game series against North Carolina A&T beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
