CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Pitt softball team fell, 10-2, to Virginia in six innings in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Palmer Park.

NEWS & NOTES

-Senior Yvonne Whaley singled in the first at bat of the game, extending her hitting streak to eight games. She has tallied a hit in 13 of her last 14 games and is hitting .362 in ACC play.

Virginia (26-21, 12-9 ACC) scored the first runs in the bottom of the first as a double, single and fielder's choice brought in one run each to make it 3-0 after one. Freshman Haylie Brunson put Pitt (14-24, 2-17 ACC) on the board with a double over the left fielder's head, scoring classmate Ana Hernandez for a 3-1 game. The Panthers registered four hits and a walk through two innings.

A single in the bottom of the third scored one for the Cavaliers followed by three runs in the fourth as Pitt trailed 7-1 after four innings.

Hernandez added to her hit total with her first career triple down the right field line in the top of the sixth, scoring sophomore Kaitlyn Burdick for the Panthers' second run. In the next at bat, sophomore Cami Compson was initially ruled safe as a throw to first pulled the first baseman off the bag, scoring a run. The call was reversed, and the Panthers ended the top of the sixth trailing 7-2.

Virginia scored three runs in the bottom of the six to clinch the game in six innings as Pitt dropped the series finale.

Pitt is next in action Tuesday, May 3 at Robert Morris. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
