The Opening Tip
• Pitt wraps up its regular season schedule Saturday, March 5 at Notre Dame. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN News from Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.
• Eight of the past 10 meetings between the two schools have been decided by single digits, including a 68-67 Notre Dame win in the first meeting this season. The Irish made their final five threes of the game and scored the game-winning basket with under five seconds remaining.
• Pitt leads the ACC and ranks 18th nationally in free throw attempts (623). The Panthers have shot more free throws than their opponent in 23 of 30 games. Pitt also leads the ACC (35th NCAA) in made free throws (435).
• John Hugley has emerged as an All-ACC and ACC Most Improved Player candidate averaging 14.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He has raised his averages by 9.7 ppg. and 3.8 rpg. from a year ago, while posting 21 double-figure scoring games and nine double-doubles.
• Mouhamadou Gueye has raised his averages to 10.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game in league play. An All-ACC Defensive Team candidate, Gueye has blocked two or more shots in 12 ACC contests.
• Jamarius Burton has scored 10 or more points in 17 league games and is averaging 13.5 points per game in ACC play. He has scored in double figures in 22 of 28 games played this season.
