RALEIGH, N.C. — University of Pittsburgh gymnasts Katie Chamberlain and Hallie Copperwheat completed 2022 season competition at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Regional Meet at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. Thursday.
Copperwheat kicked off competition in Session 1 earning a 9.850 on bars and a 9.800 on beam. Chamberlain followed in Session 2, completing her collegiate career with an 8.375 on bars.
HOW THEY GOT HERE
KATIE CHAMBERLAIN - BARS
After being forced to scratch due to injury in the 2021 NCAA Championships, Chamberlain returned this season stronger than ever and has excelled on the uneven bars for the Panthers. This season, she tied the individual program record on bars, earning a 9.950 vs. Maryland and Minnesota, has won four individual titles, and earned the EAGL conference runner-up title on bars with a 9.900 – her fourth bars score of a 9.900 or higher this season. She led the Panthers nationally on bars with an NQS of 9.890 and earned All-EAGL First Team honors and EAGL First Team All-Tournament accolades as well.
HALLIE COPPERWHEAT – BARS, BEAM
A Leighton Buzzard, England native, Copperwheat is the first Panther since Katie O'Rourke in 2014 to qualify in more than one event as an individual specialist. The rookie led Pitt with an NQS of 9.870 on beam and was one of two Panthers to score a season-high 9.925 in the event. Her NQS of 9.860 on bars was the second highest of the team behind Chamberlain. Throughout her rookie season, Copperwheat recorded the third-highest all-around score in program history, 39.500, has garnered seven individual titles – the most of anyone on the team, and was named EAGL Gymnast of the Week – the second freshman in Pitt history to earn the honor. Copperwheat also earned All-EAGL First Team accolades on bars, beam, and all-around, EAGL First Team All-Tournament on bars and all-around, and earned the prestigious EAGL Rookie of the Year award for the 2022 season.
