Pitt Falls Twice to No. 5/5 Virginia Tech Friday Afternoon

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team dropped two games to No. 5/5 Virginia Tech, losing game one 11-3 in five innings and falling 7-2 in game two Friday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.
Game One
The Hokies scored first in the top of the first, as a double, single and home run scored five total runs. It scored three in the top of the second and four in the top of the third to lead 12-0 after three.
The Panthers recorded three-straight singles in the bottom of the fourth and forced the bases the loaded with one out, but a strikeout and groundout ended the inning with no runs scored. Pitt scored in the bottom of the fourth as back-to-back doubles from Katlyn Pavlick and Kayla Lane drove in three runs total, but the Panthers fell 12-3 as it could not extend the inning.
Both Pavlick and Lane tallied two hits, while freshman Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Game Two
Virginia Tech (25-3, 11-0 ACC) scored in the third inning as a single to right followed by a throwing error brought in three runs. It added one more run later in the inning to lead 4-0. The Hokies scored two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh to lead 7-0 into the bottom of the seventh.
Pitt (11-14, 1-7 ACC) registered its first hit of the game in the seventh inning as senior Yvonne Whaley's bunt single broke up a perfect game. Sophomore Cami Compson drove in Whaley as she singled to right center. A throwing error sent Compson to third, who then scored in the next at bat via a Pavlick single to third. Lane singled to left to keep the rally going, but a fly out to right ended the game.
