Six Pitt Wrestlers Receive Seeds, Brackets for 2022 NCAA Championships

PITTSBURGH—Six University of Pittsburgh wrestling student-athletes learned their seeds and brackets for the 2022 NCAA Championships, which will be held March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Here are the seeds and opening-round matchups for Pitt's group of national qualifiers led by head coach Keith Gavin, including two returning NCAA All-Americans and three 2022 ACC champions.

Micky Phillippi, 133 Pounds, No. 12 Seed
First Round: No. 12 Micky Phillippi (Pitt) vs. No. 21 Codi Russell (Appalachian State)

Cole Matthews, 141 Pounds, No. 6 Seed
First Round: No. 6 Cole Matthews (Pitt) vs. No. 27 Joseph Zargo (Wisconsin)

Elijah Cleary, 157 Pounds, No. 20 Seed
First Round: No. 20 Elijah Cleary (Pitt) vs. No. 13 Justin Thomas (Oklahoma)

Jake Wentzel, 165 Pounds, No. 10 Seed
First Round: No. 10 Jake Wentzel (Pitt) vs. No. 23 Ashton Eyler (Lock Haven)

Gregg Harvey, 184 Pounds, No. 28 Seed
First Round: No. 28 Gregg Harvey (Pitt) vs. No. 5 Bernie Truax (Cal Poly)

Nino Bonaccorsi, 197 Pounds, No. 5 Seed
First Round: No. 5 Nino Bonaccorsi (Pitt) vs. No. 28 Andrew Davison (Northwestern)

Pitt's six NCAA qualifiers will head to Detroit on Tuesday to prepare for next Thursday's opening bouts at the national tournament, the premier event in all of college wrestling.

ESPN will once again have streaming coverage of every mat throughout the tournament. The early sessions will also be televised on ESPNU, while evening sessions will be broadcast on ESPN.
