DETROIT—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team concluded its 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships with a 24th-place team finish after scoring 20.5 points at Little Caesars Arena.
Pitt's Cole Matthews, the 83rd All-American in program history, placed fifth at 141 pounds after winning his last match of the tournament against No. 4 seed Real Woods of Stanford by 7-3 decision.

"This weekend was a rollercoaster for us," head coach Keith Gavin said in recapping Pitt's tournament. "On Friday, we were flying high after an awesome afternoon session that put us in a great position; unfortunately, we lost some heartbreakers in the end. As always, we'll learn and move forward."
"We're very happy for Cole to get on the podium for the first time," Gavin said of Matthews. "This was a promising step forward in his development. He had an awesome season in a very good weight class. We're extremely proud of his progress."
Five of the six Panthers in Detroit won a match at the tournament, with Micky Phillippi, Jake Wentzel and Nino Bonaccorsi each making strong runs through the consolation brackets to the Round of 12 before coming up one win short of earning All-America status.
Wentzel and Pitt's two other NCAA qualifiers, Elijah Cleary and Gregg Harvey, finished their collegiate careers on the Motown mats of Detroit. Wentzel concluded his Pitt career as a three-time ACC champion, two-time All-American and 2021 NCAA finalist. His final victory for the Panthers was emblematic of his remarkable contribution to Gavin's program as he defeated Arizona State's Anthony Valencia, a returning All-American, by 13-2 major decision with an incredible 5:00 of riding time.
