Pitt Drops Home Finale to No. 4 Duke

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's basketball team fell to No. 4 Duke, 86-56, at the Petersen Events Center Tuesday evening in the final regular season home game of the year.
Sophomore John Hugley scored a team-high 19 points and gathered six boards. Senior Jamarius Burton added 13 points, while graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye totaled six points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
Duke came out hot in the opening three and a half minutes of play, making 4-of-5 three-point attempts and leading 16-3 after a called timeout from Pitt.
The Blue Devils took a 6-0 scoring run into the second media timeout and held a 22-7 advantage with 11:09 in the first. Pitt got it to single-digits (27-18) after a Burton jumper, but the Panthers could not find a consistent rhythm as Duke ended the half on a 9-1 run and led, 36-19, at the break.
Pitt shot 27.6% (8-of-29) from the field and attempted only two free throws through the first 20 minutes of play. It entered the game first in the ACC and 12th nationally in free throw attempts (617).
The Panthers nearly matched their first half scoring output six minutes into the second half, scoring 16 points with Hugley accounting for nine. The Blue Devils found an answer for each basket, as it shot 72.7% (8-of-11) from the field and held a 15-point, 55-40 lead with 11:50 to play. Duke shot 70.4% in the second half and kept a double-digit advantage the rest of the way as the Panthers struggled to score, falling 86-56 at the Pete.
For the game, Pit shot 42.1% (24-of-57) for the game and 27.8% (5-of-18) from deep. It attempted a season-low six free throws, making three.
The Panthers conclude the regular season on the road in South Bend, Ind., Saturday, Mar. 5 as it takes on Notre Dame. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN News.
