PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team embraced the surroundings of the Petersen Events Center on Sunday afternoon and earned a 30-5 victory against Columbia in dual action.
The No. 19-ranked Panthers (7-5, 1-2 ACC) won the opening five bouts and never looked back against the visitors from the EIWA. The Lions (2-8, 2-5 EIWA) only won two matches.
"That was a nice victory for the team," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said. "A couple of our guys got some decent ranked wins. I thought we wrestled well. The emphasis was on finishing our attacks. It's all about continuing to build on preparation for March."
Pitt highlights included three ranked wins, including a first-minute fall by No. 17 Cole Matthews against No. 19 Matt Kizimir that extended Matthews' individual winning streak at 141 pounds to nine matches.
No. 31 Gage Curry defeated No. 28 Joe Manchio at 125 and No. 7 Micky Phillippi beat No. 25 Angelo Rini at 133 to open the dual for the Panthers in a key pair of good-on-good wrestling matches.
