Pitt Drops Dual to No. 4 NC State

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team fell to No. 4 NC State, 26-9, in Atlantic Coast Conference dual action on Friday night on ACC Network.
The Panthers (7-6, 1-3 ACC) did pick up three ranked wins against the Wolfpack (11-1, 4-0 ACC) in front of a packed Fitzgerald Field House crowd.
On Senior Night, Jake Wentzel defeated rival No. 22 Thomas Bullard in a thrilling match at 165 pounds. Wentzel remained undefeated in conference bouts with a 4-3 decision in the first tiebreaker rounds.
In his final appearance at home after six years of contributions to Pitt wrestling, Wentzel received a lengthy standing ovation from the Panthers fans in attendance after the match.
"Jake did a great job of keeping his composure," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said. "He really controlled that match against a guy that he had never beaten before. We liked the way he did it. That was a cool moment for him on Senior Night in front of a great crowd."
Also winning for the Panthers, Micky Phillippi beat No. 14 Kai Orine at 133 while Cole Matthews extended his winning streak to 10 matches at 141 with a victory over No. 24 Ryan Jack.
