Panthers Drop Home Contest to Miami

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's basketball team fell to Miami, 85-64, Tuesday evening at the Petersen Events Center.
Sophomore John Hugley scored 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting and gathered seven boards. Senior Jamarius Burton had 12 points, four rebounds and two assists while graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye totaled 11 points, five rebounds, two steals and a block.
Miami (20-8, 12-5 ACC) opened the half on a 14-4 run, shooting 6-of-9 from the field with nine of the points coming off Pitt turnovers through the first 4:18 of play. Pitt (11-18, 6-12 ACC) responded with eight-straight points out of the first media timeout, courtesy of two three pointers by graduate student Gueye and a jumper from redshirt junior Ithiel Horton to make it a 14-12 contest.
The Panthers trailed 24-18 at the under eight and 36-26 at the under four timeout. The Hurricanes ended the half on an 11-1 run, making nine of its last 10 field goals as Pitt trailed 47-27 at the break.
Pitt shot 46.2% (12-of-26) from the floor while only attempting four free throws. Miami went 59.4% (19-of-32) from the field and made 4-of-9 (44%) from deep.
Miami came out of the break making four of its first five field goals and led by as much as 26 points through the first four minutes. Pitt couldn't find a consistent rhythm in the second half and until the final four minutes, when it used a 12-0 run over the span of two and a half minutes to make it an 80-62 game. The Panthers couldn't get any closer and fell, 85-64.
For the game, Pitt shot 50% (25-of-52) from the floor while only amassing a 52.9% mark (9-of-17) from the charity stripe. The Hurricanes shot 55.2% (32-of-58) from the field and made 9-of-20 three pointers (45%).
The Panthers return to action Tuesday, Mar. 1 for the final home game of the season versus nationally ranked Duke. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. on the ACC Network.
