
Panthers Notch Road Win At Coppin State On Opening Night

BALTIMORE, MD – The Pitt women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 ACC) opened up the 2022-23 campaign with a road victory over the Coppin State Eagles Monday night by the score of 56-41. Graduate transfer Channise Lewis led the Panthers with 11 points and four rebounds in the win.
After the Eagles opened the scoring with three straight, Maliyah Johnson opened the scoring for the Panthers with a deep triple and Dayshanette Harris made a jumper just outside the lane to give Pitt the 5-3 lead. The Eagles regained an 8-7 lead midway through the quarter but the Panthers answered right back with 13 straight points as Channise Lewis connected on five straight including her first triple of her Pitt career and Liatu King netted back-to-back jumpers. The Eagles made a bucket right before the buzzer as Pitt claimed the 20-10 lead through 10 minutes.
The second quarter was sloppy for both squads as the Panthers opened the scoring with back-to-back triples by Harris and Lewis to take the 26-10 lead. Over the next six minutes, Coppin State scored the only points as they made a trio of free throws. Johnson closed out the scoring with a layup after a great feed from Lewis to give Pitt the 28-15 lead at the break.
Pitt pushed their lead to 17, 35-18, early in the third quarter as Gabby Hutcherson made a pair of buckets and Lewis nailed her third triple of the game. The Eagles responded with a 12-2 run to end the quarter as the Panthers held the 40-33 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Eagles cut the Pitt lead down to six, 45-39, midway through the final quarter but the Panthers didn't flinch. Harris ended the Coppin State run with a jumper and Amber Brown netted a pair of layups down the stretch to secure the 56-41 road win for the Panthers.
Lewis led the Panthers with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists while Harris finished off her game with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. King came off the bench with nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks in the win.
As a team, the Panthers shot 38.5% from the floor while they held the Eagles to just 25.5% shooting. Pitt also held the 37-31 edge in rebounds while going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the win.
