Pitt Welcomes George Mason Saturday Night For Home Opener At The Pete

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 ACC) will open up their home slate of games on Saturday night as they play host to the George Mason Patriots at the Petersen Events Center. Saturday's game will tip at 6:00 pm and air live on ACC Network Extra.

- The Panthers are returning 70.2% of their scoring and 71.9% of their rebounding from a season ago. In all, Pitt lost four letterwinners from last season.
- This years squad is the most experienced for head coach Lance White as the roster features 10 upperclassmen and four underclassmen. The roster has combined to appear in 611 career games while making a combined 256 career games.
- The Pitt defense opened the season with a great showing as they limited Coppin State to just 41 points on 25.5% shooting from the floor and 11.1% from behind the arc. The 41 points against marked the lowest total in a season opener against Pitt since 2015-16.
- The Panthers play host to George Mason on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 6:00 pm for their first home game of the 2022-23 season. Saturday's game will air on ACC Network Extra.
- Saturday's game will mark the 49th home opener for the Panthers and they own a 35-13 all-time record in those games. Pitt is also 15-5 all-time in home openers at the Petersen Events Center.
- The transfer combination of Gabby Hutcherson and Channise Lewis made their presence felt in the season opening win at Coppin State Monday. The two combined for 18 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists in the 15-point win.
- The Panthers opened their 2022-23 season on the road Monday night at Coppin State. Pitt came out strong and secured the 56-41 road victory, their first true road season opening win since Dec. 1, 1992 at Duquesne.
- The Panthers were led offensively by transfer point guard Channise Lewis who netted 11 points, four rebounds and three assists while going 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Senior Dayshanette Harris had a strong opener as she finished with 10 points, four assists and four rebounds in 33 minutes of work.
- Newcomer Gabby Hutcherson did a little bit of everything for the Panthers as she finished with seven points, a career-high eight rebounds, a career-high four blocks and three steals in the win. Sophomore Maliyah Johnson finished with seven points, six rebounds and two blocks.
- Defensively, the Panthers held Coppin State to just 25.5% shooting including 11.1% from behind the arc. The Eagles scored just 41 points, the lowest point total against Pitt in a season opener since 2015-16.
- Entering Saturday's game against George Mason, Pitt owns a 35-13 overall record (.729) in home openers.
- The Panthers have won three straight home openers including two seasons ago against the same George Mason squad.
- Overall, Pitt has won six of their last seven home openers by an average score of 18.5 points per game.
- Pitt is 15-5 in home openers at the Petersen Events Center.
- The Panthers leaned on their tenacious defense in the season opener it it paid off as they collected a 15-point road win over Coppin State.
- Pitt has continued their tough defense from the end of last season as they held the Eagles to just 41 points on 25.5% shooting overall and 11.1% from behind the arc.
- Dating back to last season, the Panthers have held 30 of their last 31 opponents to 45% or under shooting from the floor. Last season Pitt was one of two squads (South Carolina) to hold at least 29 opponents to 45% or less shooting.
- The 41 points against marked the lowest point total for a Pitt opponent in a season opener since 2015-16. Pitt has now held six opponents to less than 50 points scored since Lance White took over the program, winning all six of those games.
- Pitt recorded nine blocked shots in the win, their most in a season opener since joining the ACC in 2013-14. Pitt had three players notch multiple blocks including Gabby Hutcherson who had a career-high four rejections.
- Last season, the Panthers held nine ACC teams to under 70 points (including seven of the last eight), their most in a season since 2014-15 (10).
- The 2022-23 version of the Pitt Panthers is the most experienced and veteran group head coach Lance White has put together since taking over the program five years ago.
- In all, Pitt has 10 upperclassmen and four underclassmen on their roster.
- The current roster has combined to appear in 611 career games while making 256 career starts.
- The Panthers starting lineup features four upperclassmen who have combined to start 193 games over their careers. The starting lineup has also accumulated 2,105 career points.
- Senior Amber Brown is the most experienced of the bunch as she has started all 81 career games for Pitt.
- The Panthers will return home Wednesday, Nov. 16 as they welcome the Bryant Bulldogs for their 12th School Day game in program history.
- Wednesday's game will tip at 11:00 am as thousands of kids from the Pittsburgh area will be in attendance.
- Pitt is 8-3 all-time in School Day games.
