Panthers Drop ACC/B1G Game To Illinois Wednesday Night

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (5-3, 0-0 ACC) fell at home Wednesday night to the Illinois Fighting Illini in the ACC/B1G Challenge at the Petersen Events Center, 92-71. Dayshanette Harris led Pitt with 16 points in the loss.
Maliyah Johnson opened the scoring for Pitt with a jumper and a triple in the corner to cut the Illinois lead to two, 7-5, three minutes in. The Illini responded with a 9-2 run over the next five minutes to force a Pitt timeout as the visitors were up 16-7 with two minutes to play in the first. The Panthers came right back and netted the final six points of the quarter as Amber Brown made four free throws and Liatu King nailed a jumper at the buzzer to send the game to the second with Pitt trailing 18-13.
The Illini got hot from three to start the second quarter as they knocked down their first three triple attempts of the quarter to push their lead out to 27-17. Avery Strickland and Johnson finished off back-to-back layups midway through the quarter but the Illini ended the half on a 19-7 run to take the 50-30 lead into the locker room.
Pitt had a great start to the third as they scored the first six points of the half as Johnson made a pair of free throws, Brown finished off a layup after a great feed from Channise Lewis and Marley Washenitz made a jumper in the lane after a behind the back dribble. Illinois scored the next seven before Harris caught fire from the floor as she scored nine straight to cut the Pitt deficit to 18, 63-45. The Illini again got hot from deep as they made three more triples down the stretch to send the game to the fourth with Illinois leading 79-55.
The Panthers were able to win the scoring battle in the fourth quarter 16-13 as Strickland knocked down a couple triples but the Panthers weren't able to climb out of the big hole, falling 92-71 in front of the home fans.
King finished off her night with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Brown added 10 points, four rebounds and two steals in the loss. Off the bench, Strickland finished with eight points while Hutcherson hit a couple triples and finished with six points.
As a team, Illinois went 14-for-24 from behind the arc while shooting 55.7% from the floor overall in the win. Pitt finished the game shooting 45.5% from the floor and 44.4% from behind the arc but were out-rebounded 36-22 for the game.

Pitt will have a week off before returning home as they welcome Loyola (MD) to the Pete on Wednesday, Dec. 7 for a 6:00 pm tip. Next week's game will air live on ACC Network Extra.
