11/3/2022 2:04:00 PM | Volleyball
PITTSBURGH – No. 7 Pitt (22-2, 12-0 ACC) close out the ACC round robin portion of the schedule this weekend, traveling to Syracuse (10-12, 6-6 ACC) and Boston College (16-10, 4-8 ACC). This will be the final two programs the Panthers will take on in ACC play, looking to secure just the second 14-0 start to ACC play in program history.
The Panthers have won 13 straight road matches dating back to last season, the longest active streak in Division I. Overall, Pitt has won 15 matches in a row, the fourth longest active streak in the country, and the longest among Power 5 schools. Pitt is the only Power 5 team with an undefeated conference record.
WEEK 11 SCHEDULE
LAST TIME OUT
The Panthers extended their winning streak last weekend with a pair of sweeps over Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. It was the second perfect weekend of conference play for Pitt and the first on the road, earning back-to-back sweeps in the same weekend vs. Miami and Florida State as well (Oct. 14-16).
Pitt held Virginia Tech to -.037 hitting in the last match, the lowest opponent hitting percentage in an ACC match in program history. This was just another example of the defensive strength the Panthers possess, holding their opponents to .138 hitting this year, the fourth lowest in the country and the second lowest among Power 5 programs.
Spooky Good Last Month
Pitt finished undefeated in October (9-0) marking just the sixth time in program history that Pitt has posted a perfect record throughout October: also 1974, 1975, 1987, 1996 and 2019. The Panthers won two Top 10 matches during the month, defeating No. 10 Georgia Tech on the road and taking down No. 2 Louisville inside Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers held their opponents to .106 hitting throughout the month averaging more than four more kills/set than the opposition (14.58 kills/set to 10.29).
Courtney Buzzerio was excellent in just about every aspect of her game the past month. She led the team with 128 kills (4.13 kills/set) on .331 hitting. She also made 12 aces with only seven service errors while making .94 digs and .87 blocks/set.
Another significant stand out from the past month is the play of Serena Gray. Gray averaged 2.00 kills/set over the nine matches, doing do on a .451 clip. She bumped her season hitting percentage up to .432, the fourth highest in Division I. No other player in the nation has a higher hitting percentage with more attempts than Gray.
PANTHER POWER TRAVELS
Pitt has started the season 9-0 on the road improving their road winning streak to 13 matches dating back to last season. It is the longest active road winning streak in the nation and the third 10+ match road win streak in the Dan Fisher era.
The Panthers have now won 26 of their last 27 road contests dating back to the fall of 2020. 18 of those wins have come in ACC matches with the lone blemish coming at No. 2 Louisville, in five sets, last season.
This year, Buzzerio has been leading the charge in unfriendly territory, pacing the offense with 114 kills in 31 sets (3.68/set) on .331 hitting. Ashley Browske has been upped her game on the road as well, averaging 3.69 digs/set on the road, an increase of 0.7 digs/set compared to her home and neutral site matches. The defensive effort doesn't just stop with Browske, Rachel Fairbanks is averaging 2.87 digs/set & Vazquez Gomez makes 2.32 on the road, increases of .70 and 0.21 d/s respectively.
SCOUTING SYRACUSE
The Orange enter the weekend with a 6-6 record in the ACC after a tumultuous season. SU suffered losses in three of its last four non-conference matches to Army, Yale and Bryant, before winning the first four matches of ACC play. Since the 4-0 start, the Orange are 2-6 and have lost all but one of their last 10 sets at the hands of Georgia Tech, Florida State and Miami. Syracuse has the lowest home winning percentage in the ACC, winning just three of the nine matches thus far (.333). This will be the 56th meeting between the two schools, the most meetings of any series for Pitt. The Panthers lead the all-time series, 42-13 and are 11-4 in the Dan Fisher era.
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE
The Eagles enter the weekend one game above last place in the ACC with a 4-8 record after upsetting both Miami and Florida State in four-sets this past week. BC has won three of its last five matches and have not lost at home since Oct. 9. The all-time series with BC is the most lopsided in Pitt's record book as the Panthers have won 35 of the 36 meetings. Pitt has not lost to BC since 2000 and are 13-0 in the Dan Fisher era.
