PITTSBURGH – No. 9 Pitt (14-2, 4-0 ACC) head out on the road for the second week in a row for a pair of ACC matches at Clemson and No. 10 Georgia Tech. These will be the fourth and fifth straight road matches for the Panthers after going 3-0 to start the trip, last week.
The weekend features a Top-10 test against Georgia Tech. Pitt is 2-0 in Top-10 matches this year (No. 7 BYU and No. 5 Ohio State) and has never won three matches in a row over Top 10 opponents in program history. The match will be played inside McCamish Pavilion, marking the first time a volleyball match has been played inside the historic venue.
LAST TIME OUT
Pitt won all three matches last week against Virginia (3-1), Duke (3-0) and High Point (3-1). The Panthers won four of their nine sets over the week by 10 or more points, while also dropping two 25-23 sets to UVA and HPU. Courtney Buzzerio established herself as one of the most consistent and efficient scorers in the ACC, leading Pitt in kills in all three matches, making 45 kills on .391 hitting, including a season-best 20 kills against High Point. She was one of two Panthers to hit 20 kills, as Valeria Vazquez Gomez set a new career high, becoming the first pair of Panthers to record 20 kills in the same match since 2011.
BELIEVE THE BUZZ
Graduate transfer Courtney Buzzerio was named ACC Player of the Week after making 4.83 kills/set on .391 hitting against Tennessee and Ohio State. She leads Pitt with 197 kills this season, doing so on .343 hitting. She has now made at least 3.25 kills/set in eight straight matches - tied for the second longest streak of her career (12 in a row at Iowa to begin the 2021 season).
That hitting percentage is the second highest in the nation among non-middle blockers with more than 400 attempts and the most in the ACC by a pin hitter. She became the first Panther to be named ACC Player of the Week this season and is the only Panther to be named PNC Achiever of the Week (Pitt's internal player of the week award) multiple times this year.
PANTHER POWER TRAVELS
Pitt has started the season 5-0 on the road improving their road winning streak to nine matches dating back to last season. The Panthers have now won 22 of their last 23 road contests dating back to the fall of 2020.
14 of those 22 road wins have come in ACC matches with the lone blemish coming at No. 2 Louisville, in five sets, last season. Pitt is 3-1 against ranked opponents on the road during this run with wins over No. 5 Notre Dame in 2020, No. 13 Georgia Tech in 2021 and No. 7 BYU earlier this season.
This year, Buzzerio has been leading the charge in unfriendly territory, pacing the offense with 67 kills in 18 sets (3.72/set) on .365 hitting. Ashley Browske has been upped her game on the road as well, averaging 3.56 digs/set on the road, an increase of 0.61 digs/set compared to her home and neutral site matches.
SCOUTING CLEMSON
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 1-3 ACC record after dropping matchers to Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and No. 2 Louisville. They won their last match in five-sets at Notre Dame for their 10th win of the season (10-6). They have one of the most prolific liberos in the conference on their back line, Devan Taylor. Taylor owns the second most total digs of any Power 5 DS, with 284, the most in the ACC. Pitt leads the all-time series, 11-1, and have won the last 11 meetings dating back to 2013.
SCOUTING GEORGIA TECH
The Yellow Jackets (10-3, 3-1) are coming off of a four-set loss at No. 2 Louisville last Sunday. It was just their third loss of the year along with No. 24 Arkansas and No. 8 Ohio State. The UL loss halted a streak of four-straight sweeps for GT. Eight of their 10 wins this year have come in three sets, including ranked wins over No. 10 BYU and No. 17 Illinois. Georgia Tech boasts one of the best hitters in the country, Julia Bergmann. She leads the ACC in kills/set (5.23) points/set (5.88) and attacks/set (12.36), coming in at fourth in the nation in kills/set as well. Pitt leads the all-time series 11-2 with GT's only win of the Dan Fisher era coming last season, in five sets. Pitt is 5-0 at Georgia Tech.
