PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving programs totaled seven first place finishes over a two-day, double dual meet against Penn State and Notre Dame Saturday morning at Trees Pool.
"The energy in Trees Pool was fantastic both Friday and Saturday with a lot of alums, parents and fans in attendance, said head coach Chase Kreitler."
Facing off against Penn State for the first time in 11 years, the Panthers men's swimming program totaled 180 points to defeat the Nittany Lions for the first time since Jan. 16, 2010. The Panthers fell to Notre Dame, tallying 140.5 points against the Fighting Irish.
The women's swimming team fell to both Penn State and Notre Dame, totaling 157 against the Nittany Lions and 147 against Fighting Irish.
"Our focus going into the meet was centered around our preparation to compete, executing details in their events that we've been focusing on in practice and maximizing recovery after each race and we did a great job of that," said Kreitler.
Senior Jerry Chen finished first in two events over the weekend: the 200 breaststroke (1:58.63), 100 breaststroke (53.99), and took second in the 200 IM (1:51.59). Junior Marcin Goraj also earned two first place finishes in the 200 Free (1:38.15) and 200 Back (1:44.88). In a tight race with Penn State, the men's 200 MR team of Goraj, Mahler, Cooper Van Der Laan and Flynn Crisci finished milliseconds ahead of the Nittany Lions with a time of 1:29.17.
The dominance of the men's and women's diving programs continued into the second day. Senior Dylan Reed finished first in the men's 3-meter springboard (402.70), his second first place finish of the weekend. Freshman Rachel Dickerson also claimed a first place in the women's 1-meter springboard with a score of 307.10, finishing 20-points ahead of second place.
"Dylan, Jerry and Marcin definitely lead the group with two event wins against PSU each, but it was the other guys fighting for second to fifth-place points that impressed me most. From Seniors to freshmen our whole team is excited to take our program to the next level."
On the women's side, the Panthers finished 1-2-3 in 1000 Free event. The top finishers were Abby Licht (10:10.86), Jacqueline Tinneneny (10:12.76), and Emily Bucaro (10:13.68) were the top finishers in 1000 Free.
"This was a great first meet for our women's team," said Kreitler. "While we dropped both dual meets, I thought our 1-2-3 finish in the Women's 1000 and our overall results showed that we are excited to challenge teams that have historically been ahead of us. We are just getting started!"
Pitt will be back in action on Nov. 5, as the Panthers travel to Atlanta, Ga. to compete against Georgia Tech.
