PITTSBURGH – No. 8 Pitt (16-2, 6-0 ACC) return to Fitzgerald Field House after a perfect 5-0 road trip. The Panthers will host Miami (Friday at 7 p.m.) and Florida State (Sunday at 1 p.m.) this weekend in the fourth week of ACC play.
The Panthers bring a 37-match home winning streak against unranked ACC opponents into the weekend, a streak that extends back to the 2017 season. Both Miami (No. 49) and Florida State (No. 32) are ranked inside the RPI Top 50, making this the only conference weekend on the schedule featuring two Top 50 RPI opponents, as it currently stands.
LAST TIME OUT
Pitt extended the second longest active road winning streak in the country to 11 matches with a pair of ACC victories at Clemson and No. 10 Georgia Tech. The Panthers strung together a pair of very strong performances, defeating Clemson in straight sets, including the most dominant set victory of the season (25-8). Against Georgia Tech, Pitt secured its third consecutive Top 10 victory, the first time a Panther team had done so. Valeria Vazquez Gomez was named ACC Player of the week after posting a double-double against Georgia Tech (15 kills, 10 digs) and finishing the week with 3.14 kill/set on .462 hitting with 3.29 digs/set.
SO GOOD IT'S BIZARRE-IO
Graduate transfer Courtney Buzzerio is on an All-American pace in her lone year at Pitt. She leads the team with 227 kills this season, doing so on .342 hitting. No other player in Division I has a higher hitting percentage than her with as many or more attempts (489). Buzzerio leads all ACC pin hitters in hitting percentage and is eighth overall with 197 more attempts than the next closest player in the ACC hitting % Top 10.
She became the first Panther to be named ACC Player of the Week this season after making 4.83 kills/set on .391 hitting against Tennessee and Ohio State and is the only Panther to be named PNC Achiever of the Week (Pitt's internal player of the week award) three separate times this year. She has now made at least 3.25 kills/set in 10 straight matches - tied for the second longest streak of her career (12 in a row at Iowa to begin the 2021 season). Buzzerio has made 10+ kills while hitting at least .300 in each of her last five matches - the longest such streak of her career.
TOPPLING THE TOP 10
Pitt is 3-0 against Top 10 opponents this season, taking wins at No. 7 BYU, vs. No. 5 Ohio State and at No. 10 Georgia Tech. The Panthers' three-match winning streak over Top 10 opponents is the longest in program history and puts this year's team one Top 10 win behind the program record, set in 2020-21.
Pitt's 3-1 win over No. 7 BYU back in the first weekend of September ended the Cougars' 30-match home winning streak. The Panthers swept No. 5 Ohio State in Fitzgerald Field House, the first home sweep of a Top 5 opponent in program history, before defeating No. 10 Georgia Tech, 3-1, at McCamish Pavilion last week. Pitt is still perfect, 6-0, when playing at Georgia Tech.
Ashley Browske has been dominant in all three Top 10 matches, posting 4.45 digs/set, an increase of nearly two full digs compared to her other matches. Her 4.45 digs/set against Top 10 would be the fourth highest average in the Power 5.
SCOUTING MIAMI
The Hurricanes enter the weekend with a 10-7, 3-3 ACC record. Miami swept Duke last weekend after falling in five sets to FSU in Tallahassee. They are one of the top teams in the conference in serve/receive, only allowing 1.02 aces/set against them, tied for the second-best mark in the conference, alongside Pitt. The Panthers lead the all-time series 12-4, winning the last nine meetings dating back to 2014.
SCOUTING FLORIDA STATE
Florida State (12-5, 4-2 ACC) has won three matches in a row entering this weekend, taking down North Carolina and Miami in five sets before sweeping Duke. The Seminoles are 0-3 against ranked opponents this year, falling to No. 17 Creighton, No. 15 Florida and No. 2 Louisville. Pitt leads the all-time series against FSU, 12-5, winning the last eight matchups dating back to 2016.
