PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team fell to No. 8 Virginia Tech, 24-12, on Sunday afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House.
The No. 19 Panthers (6-4, 1-1 ACC) won four bouts in a competitive dual and battled back from an early deficit to level the score at 9-9 after six matches.
But the visiting Hokies (6-4, 1-1 ACC) scored bonus points in three of the final four matches to pull away.
Winning for Pitt, Cole Matthews continued his hot streak at 141, Elijah Cleary earned a dramatic victory in sudden victory at 157, Jake Wentzel comfortable won at 165 and Nino Bonaccorsi also cruised at 197.
"There were a couple key matches we needed to win that we didn't get," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said. "Give Virginia Tech credit. They have a good team. That's what it's like in the ACC. We'll have another tough test next week against UNC. We have to keep learning and improving."
