CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team dropped a tight Atlantic Coast Conference dual at No. 24 North Carolina, 19-12, on Friday evening at Carmichael Arena.
In a match that came down to heavyweight, the No. 19 Panthers (6-5, 1-2 ACC) fell against the Tar Heels (8-4, 3-0) as the hosts remained atop the ACC standings.
The biggest individual win of the night, however, went Pitt's way.
At 141, No. 17 Cole Matthews handed No. 6 Kizhan Clarke his first loss of the season with a 3-2 decision. Thanks to a smooth takedown in the first period and some great defensively wrestling at the end, Matthews extended his own winning streak to eight with his second top-10 win of the season.
Also earning wins for the Panthers were No. 31 Gage Curry at 125, No. 14 Jake Wentzel at 165 and No. 7 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197, with the latter two just missing major decisions after dominating performances.
Full results from Friday's Pitt-North Carolina dual are available below.
The Panthers return home on Sunday for a special dual against Columbia at the Petersen Events Center.
Tickets are on sale for the match at the Pete, which will begin at 2 p.m. Fans can park free in the OC Lot and enter the building through Gate A on the northwest side of the building.
The Pitt-Columbia contest will also be streamed live on ACC Network Extra and via the ESPN app.
