PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's cross country programs will officially open up their 2021 campaigns Friday evening as they co-host the Yinzer Classic at the Youthtowne course in Imperial, PA. This marks the second straight season the Panthers have hosted a meet at the scenic Youthtowne course.
The women's 4K race is set to begin at 6:00 pm followed by the men's 6K race at around 6:30 pm. Friday's season opening meet will feature free admission and food trucks. The address for the Youthtowne Sports Complex is 150 Youthtowne Drive, Imperial, PA 15126. The course is a 2,000m loop as the women's race will be two laps and the men's race three laps.
Friday's meet will be co-hosted by Pitt, Duquesne, Robert Morris and Carnegie Mellon while Seton Hill, Saint Francis and Youngstown State will also compete in the season opener.
The men's squad returns seven letter winners from a season ago led by Josh Higgins, Evan Addison and Tyler Rollins who have the most experience on the squad. The Panthers will be looking for a strong impact from Jack Miller, Ethan Maher, Sam Otis and Luke Henseler.
Six newcomers will also look to make a strong first impression for the Panthers as Finn Walsh, Alex Lombardo, Peyton Geehrer, Quintin Gatons, Trey Gannon and Solomon Chavez will all compete in their first collegiate race Friday.
The women's team returns 12 runners who competed for Pitt during the shortened 2020 campaign. Megan Nagy and Brenda Ayuk have the most experience of the returners but the Panthers will be relying on a talented sophomore class which features Emily Brown, Sadie Carey-Tharp, Reagan Flannery, Faith Min, Veronica Sanchez and Olivia Zambrio. Some of the other upperclassmen who will look to make an impact for Pitt this year are Jenna Baltes, Caroline Bolen, Mya Rivenburg and Lily Robertson.
Pitt will look for some major contributions from their eight-runner freshmen class that features Sarah Hurst, Ellen Baker, Isabella Bufalini, Winnie Incorvaia, Mia Ingalls, Emily Jobes, Abby Michalec and Michaela Schiele. Six of the eight newcomers will be making their collegiate debut Friday night for the Panthers as they take on six other squads from the area.
Pitt returns to Youthtowne in two weeks as they will battle local foe Robert Morris on Friday, September 17.
