
No. 4 Pitt Volleyball Rolls to 8-0 with Sweep of Bowling Green

PITTSBURGH – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (8-0, 0-0 ACC) put an exclamation point on the end of the Panther Challenge with a sweep of Bowling Green (3-6, 0-0 MAC) at Fitzgerald Field House Saturday night.
The win marked the Panthers' third sweep of the season, earning the win by scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-16.
Four Panthers hit for .500 or better on the night, including middle blocker Chiamaka Nwokolo (.571, five kills), middle blocker Serena Gray (.500, seven kills), outside hitter Valeria Vazquez Gomez (.500, seven kills) and outside hitter Kayla Lund (.500, five kills).
Right side Chinaza Ndee led Pitt with 10 kills and added three blocks. Gray had a team-best four blocks for the night.
Lund and libero Ashley Browske each had a match-best eight digs apiece. Setters Lexis Akeo and Kylee Levers contributed 17 and 16 assists, respectively.
Pitt hit .345 for the night while holding Bowling Green to a .089 clip. The Panthers had decisive advantages in kills (44-25), assists (39-23), service aces (6-4) and digs (34-22). The Falcons had more blocks (8.0-7.0).
SET ONE: No. 4 Pitt 25, Bowling Green 19
A slow start for the Panthers resulted in a 6-2 Bowling Green run that earned an 8-4 lead for the Falcons. Pitt stole back the lead (13-12), following a 4-0 run, but BG was able to tie the frame four more times, with the latest tie at 16. A 4-0 run put Pitt ahead 19-16, and a 3-0 run gave the Panthers a 23-18 advantage. A kill by Ndee and an attack error by the Falcons gave Pitt the 1-0 lead in the match.
SET TWO: No. 4 Pitt 25, Bowling Green 17
Pitt rolled to a 5-0 lead to start the set and never looked back, earning a wire-to-wire win in the second to go up, 2-0. The Panthers held Bowling Green to a .074 hitting percentage while hitting .308 themselves.
SET THREE: No. 4 Pitt 25, Bowling Green 16
It was more of the same for Pitt in the third frame, as the Panthers exploded for a 7-0 run to begin the set. The Panthers pushed the margin to 12-3 following a 4-0 run, but BGSU was able to cut it to four (15-11) after outscoring Pitt 8-3. The Panthers stayed strong and ended the match on a 3-0 run to earn a decisive 25-16 set win and 3-0 sweep.

Pitt will travel to Morehead, Ky., for a pair of matches as part of the Comfort Inn-vitational hosted by Morehead State. The Panthers will take on the host Eagles Friday, Sept. 17, before facing Marshall Saturday, Sept. 18, on a neutral court.
