No. 4 Pitt Volleyball Cruises to Sweep of Marshall

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (9-0, 0-0 ACC) made light work of Marshall (4-8, 0-0 C-USA) in a sweep Friday afternoon at Johnson Arena as part of the Comfort Inn-vitational.
The Panthers cruised to the victory by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-20.
Five Panthers recorded five or more kills, including right side Chinaza Ndee (11), outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh (10), middle blocker Serena Gray (nine), middle blocker Sabrina Starks (six) and utility player Chiamaka Nwokolo (five). Starks hit for .714 on the day, with just one error on seven attempts.
Setter Kylee Levers posted her team-leading fifth double-double of the year with 21 assists and a match-best 17 digs.
Freshman Emmy Klika earned her first start at libero and picked up 14 digs.
Gray led the team with four blocks, including two solos.
Pitt had huge advantages in nearly every stat category, including kills (50-18), assists (41-16), service aces (4-1), digs (55-30) and blocks (7.0-6.0). The Panthers handily out-hit the Herd, .324 to .021.
SET ONE: No. 4 Pitt 25, Marshall 10
The Panthers hit a blistering .600 in the first frame, with 17 kills on 25 attempts with just two errors. Pitt was stingy on defense as well, allowing just four kills with four errors on 24 swings for a .000 percentage by the Herd. Starks led the Panthers with a perfect five kills on five attempts in the set.
SET TWO: No. 4 Pitt 25, Marshall 13
A slower start to the second set resulted in four ties and two lead changes. Pitt found its momentum with a 6-0 run, pushing the margin to 17-9. The Panthers ended the set on a 6-0 run, earning a 2-0 lead in the match after a 25-13 win in the second.
SET THREE: No. 4 Pitt 25, Marshall 20
After the Panthers surrendered the first point to the Herd, Pitt pushed back with a 5-0 run. Another 5-0 run kept the Panthers in front (14-8), but Marshall was able to creep up and cut the margin to 24-20 after a 4-1 surge. Pitt sealed the sweep after just sixty-six minutes of play with a solo block by Gray.
