
No. 4 Pitt Volleyball Upends No. 12 BYU, 3-1

PITTSBURGH – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (7-0, 0-0 ACC) handed No. 12 BYU (7-1, 0-0 WCC) its first loss of the season with a 3-1 victory at Fitzgerald Field House Friday night.
The Panthers earned the win by scores of 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24. The victory marked Pitt's fourth win against a Top 25 opponent this season.
Right side hitter Chinaza Ndee had a match-high 17 kills on .359 hitting and added two blocks. Outside Kayla Lund had 15 kills, two service aces and nine digs.
Libero Ashley Browske tied a career high with 19 digs for the Panthers.
Setter Kylee Levers posted her fourth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 12 digs. Lexis Akeo paced the Panthers with 26 assists and added nine digs.
Middle blockers Sabrina Starks and Chiamaka Nwokolo had three blocks apiece to lead Pitt.
Pitt had the upper hand in kills (63-57), assists (58-49), service aces (6-4) and digs (72-66). BYU out-hit the Panthers, .284-.265, and had more blocks (11.0-7.0).
SET ONE: No. 4 Pitt 25, No. 12 BYU 21
Pitt trailed 14-9 after a 3-0 BYU run, but made up their ground with a 10-2 surge to take a 20-17 lead. Some hot serving kept the Panthers in front, as they went on to claim the first set, 25-21. Pitt hit .286 in the frame while BYU hit .333. Pitt had four service aces in the stanza.
SET TWO: No. 12 BYU 25, No. 4 Pitt 21
A 7-2 BYU run ultimately swung the momentum in the Cougars' favor. They later extended the margin to 20-13 with a 4-0 run. The Panthers survived four set points, down 24-17, thanks to some great serving by Gray, but a Cougar block ended the frame and evened the match at one set apiece.
SET THREE: No. 4 Pitt 25, No. 12 BYU 20
The Panthers found their footing in the third set, using a 4-1 run to pull into a 22-18 lead. The set ended with Pitt on top, 25-20. The Panthers hit .318 in the frame while holding the Cougars to .186.
SET FOUR: No. 4 Pitt 26, No. 12 BYU 24
Pitt stayed ahead for most of the fourth frame, after earning a 16-10 margin following a 4-0 run. The Cougars were able to tie the set at 18, but Pitt pulled ahead into striking distance with a 4-0 surge (22-18). The Panthers had match point at 24-21, but BYU rattled off three consecutive points to tie it at 24 and force extras. A kill by Lund and a block by Ndee and Serena Gray secured the match for Pitt.
