PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team, led by fourth-year head coach Jodi Hermanek, announced the addition of Kat Rodriguez to the team today.
From Pembroke Pines, Fla., Rodriguez enters as a junior where she spent the first two years of her career at Quinnipiac University. She primarily played third base with the Bobcats.
"We are thrilled that Kat is joining the Panther's program," said Hermanek. "Kat is a seasoned veteran, with maturity and a competitive personality that will be a great fit for our program. Kat is a defensive utility who will supply depth to both the infield and outfield while offensively she has proven that she can carry a consistent role."
Rodriguez led the Bobcats offensively last season with a .325 batting average and a .880 OPS. She tallied team-highs in hits (43), runs (24), doubles (8), total bases (59) and slugging percentage (.484). She also recorded two homers, 18 RBI and drew six walks and was named All-MAAC Second Team.
In a shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19, Rodriguez registered six hits, five runs, and five RBI.
Rodriguez attended American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla., where she helped the team to three conference championships and a combined 64-21 record in three years. Her team placed first in the state with a 21-8 record junior year. Rodriguez claimed First Team All-Broward four times, First Team Miami Herald three times and First Team All-State twice along with Second Team All-State once.
Rodriguez played club ball for the Gold Coast Hurricanes and has been a member of the Colombian National Team since 2017. With Gold Coast, she played in the 2016 All-Star game and 2016 All-American game in Colorado. She also played in the 2018 USA Missouri Invitational and participated in the 2021 FGCL summer league with Team Phinz, who placed second.
At American Heritage, she was a member of the bowling team junior and senior year. Rodriguez attended Archbishop McCarthy her freshman year, where she played softball and volleyball.
Rodriguez is the eighth newcomer to the 2021-22 squad, joining fellow Texas Tech transfer Yvonne Whaley and freshmen Kendall Brown, Haylie Brunson, Rachael Fuerst, Kylie Griggs, Ana Hernandez, Maya Johnson, Tuta Ramirez.
The Panthers begin fall play Sunday, Sept. 26 at home against Seton Hill in a double-header beginning at 12 p.m.
