PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball program announced the addition of Texas Tech transfer Yvonne Whaley to the team today.
A utility player who primarily played outfield last season, Whaley is coming off a strong season where she was an offensive leader in multiple categories for the Red Raiders. In 46 games played, Whaley led the team in batting average (.342), hits (50), doubles (9), and tied for first in on-base percentage (.381) and runs (24). She also recorded 15 RBI, nine walks, one homer, eight stolen bases and a .425 slugging percentage.
"Yvonne is a tremendous add to the Panther roster because of her awesome character, maturity and Power Five competitive experience," said Head Coach Jodi Hermanek. "Statistically on paper, she had great success in the Big 12 conference and when you watch her play, she has all the athletic and competitive qualities that are the values of Panther softball. Yvonne competes aggressively with speed and power on the left side of the plate, which is an awesome add to our offense. I see Yvonne's defensive play in the middle infield for the Panthers."
From Houston, Texas, Whaley made 19 starts and appeared in 22 games in a shortened 2020 season. That year, she hit .326 with 15 hits, 14 runs, six RBI and eight stolen bases. Whaley made an immediate impact for the Red Raiders her freshman season (2019), starting in 33 of 43 appearances and hitting .291 with 23 hits, 13 runs, four doubles and eight RBI. She was named Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team that same season.
Whaley was a four-year letterwinner at Dobie High School, where she earned All-Academic honors as a senior and was voted the district 22-6A MVP. She was an All-District 22-6A First Team selection freshman, sophomore and junior year and was named TSWA Class 6A All-State Honorable Mention following her junior and senior campaigns.
Whaley, who will enter as a transfer senior, will have two years of athletic eligibility left. She joins incoming freshmen Kendall Brown, Haylie Brunson, Kylie Griggs, Ana Hernandez, Maya Johnson and Tuta Ramirez as new Panthers entering the 2021-22 year.
