GREENSBORO, N.C. — Pitt's Kate McKay, Athalie Palomo, Amanda West and Emily Yaple were named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Soccer Team, the conference announced Wednesday. The four selections double the total amount the Panthers had since joining the league for the 2013 season.
West becomes the first Panther to earn the academic award twice. A Biological Sciences major, the sophomore turned in a 3.679 GPA this year to bump her cumulative GPA to 3.548. The forward this year also became the first Pitt player garner All-ACC Second Team and All-Atlantic Region First-Team selections. One of the nation's top scorers in the 2020-21 season, she placed third in total points (33), fourth in goals (13), 10th in game-winning goals (four) and 25th in assists (seven).
A team captain alongside West, McKay started every game as a centerback while finishing second on the team in assists (five) and third in points (11). The junior became just the second Panther to earn ACC Defensive Player of the week after leading the defense to just one goal allowed while contributing four points in the season-opening pair of wins at Appalachian State. Also a Biological Sciences major, the 2019 ACC Honor Roll member turned in a 3.574 GPA this year and has a 3.583 cumulative GPA.
Palomo has also been a mainstay in the defender's unit in her two years at Pitt. She scored the game-winning goal, an Olimpico, in the City Game victory to open up the spring season and finished with five points this year. A 2019 ACC Honor Roll selection as well, the Environmental Science major improved her cumulative GPA to 3.496 with a 3.672 GPA this season.
Yaple garners the academic distinction in the first year of her collegiate career. The midfielder started every game in the fall and spring and had three goals and two assists. She turned in the game-winning goal in her very first ACC game, a 2-0 home win over Syracuse. A sophomore academically and undeclared in her major, she had a 3.946 GPA this year and 3.888 cumulative GPA.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the team.
