No. 16 Pitt Splits Doubleheader with Boston College for Home Series Win

PITTSBURGH – No. 16 Pitt (22-13, 16-11) split a doubleheader against Boston College (20-25, 9-21) with a 4-3 victory and 6-2 loss Saturday at Charles L. Cost Field. With a 4-3 win Friday, the Panthers recorded their program-best sixth ACC series victory this season.
Game One Recap
Pitt scored two unanswered runs in the eighth inning for a comeback victory. Bryce Hulett led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third base on a groundout by Brock Franks. After pinch-hitter Matt Tarabek was hit by a pitch, Jordan Anderson laid down a sac bunt to tie the game up. Sky Duff knocked in the game-winning run on a two-out double to left field.
Pitt got on the board in the third inning. Duff doubled down the left field line with one out. After advancing to third base on a Nico Popa single to right center, Duff scored on an RBI-groundout by Kyle Hess.
Boston College took the lead in the next inning, tying it up with a leadoff homer to right field and then getting an RBI-fielder's choice.
David Yanni tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff homer to right field, his team-high 11th of the year.
The Eagles led again with a two-out RBI-single in the seventh inning.
Game Two Recap
The Eagles struck first again in the second inning, taking advantage of two errors that put the leadoff runner at second base and resulted in a two-out one-run single.
The Panthers tied it up in the bottom of the inning. Yanni drew a one-out walk and stole second base. After Hulett walked, Franks brought home Yanni with a single through the left side.
Boston College went ahead for good in the next frame with a sac fly to right field and added to its lead with a solo two-out homer to right field in the fifth inning.
Pitt cut its deficit to one in the bottom of the fifth inning. Anderson and Duff were hit by pitches to begin the frame and each stole a base. Anderson scored on a RBI-fielder's choice from Popa.
Boston College padded its lead in the seventh inning with a base-loaded walk followed by a two-run single.
NOTES
Pitt returns to action against NC State next weekend, with the three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.

- Matt Gilbertson (6-3) started game one and went eight innings with three runs, eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
- Gilbertson has gone at least five innings in every one of his 14 career starts.
- Chase Smith retired the side afterwards to pick up his first save of the season and eighth of his career, tying J.R. Leonardi (2010-14), Tanner Wilt (2012-13) and Mike Rohrbach (1995-96) for fourth-most in program history.
- Billy Corcoran started game two and went four innings with one earned run, five hits, one walk and one strikeout.
- Chris Gomez threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts, two walks and one hit.
- Yanni's game-one homer was the 27th of his career, moving him ahead of P.J. Hiser (2002-04) for seventh-most in program history.
- Yanni also moved into a tie for fourth-place in career doubles (47) with Brad Rhea (1999-02) and career RBIs (143) with Joe Leonard (2008-10) and 10th-place for career runs (141) with Jim Negrych (2004-06).
- Duff had a team-best five hits on the day with two doubles and a walk.
- Yanni reached base five times with two hits, two walks and a hit by pitch.
- Pitt has notched four victories this season when trailing after seven innings.
