Pitt Drops Series-Opener 6-1 at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Pitt (22-17, 16-15) dropped the series-opener 6-1 at Wake Forest (18-27, 8-22) Thursday night at David E. Couch Ballpark.
The Demon Deacons' Michael Turconi hit three two-run homers in the first, fifth and seventh inning.
The Panthers got their lone run in the eighth inning. With one out, the bases were loaded after singles by Jordan Anderson and Nico Popa and a walk from Sky Duff. Kyle Hess brought home Anderson with an RBI-fielder's choice to the second baseman.
The second game of the series is Friday at 3 p.m. on the ACC Network.

- Mitch Myers started and went six innings with four runs, six hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
- David Yanni moved ahead of Peter Parise (2004-07) for the most career starts (209) in program history.
- Popa moved ahead of Casey Roche (2011-2014) for the second-most hit by pitches (28), advanced past Scott Folmar (2000-03) for the seventh-most starts (191), surpassed Frank Maldonado (2014-18) for a tie with Stuart Rykaceski (1999-03) for the eighth-most games played (197), topped Maldonado and Sean Conley (2005-08) for the 11th-most total bases (308) and tied Kevan Smith (2004-06) for the 12th-most hits (204).
- Chase Smith and Corey Sawyer combined for a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout for each of them.
- Duff had a team-high two hits and also a walk.
- Ron Washington, Jr. was the only other Panther to reach base twice with a single and walk.
