No. 17 Pitt Drops Series Finale to No. 12 Notre Dame 11-5

PITTSBURGH –No. 17 Pitt baseball (13-10, 9-9) dropped the series finale 11-5 against No. 12 Notre Dame (13-5, 12-5) Monday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field. With one more hit (13-12) than the Irish, the Panthers left on 15 baserunners.

The Irish scored first on a solo homer in the second inning and added another run in the next inning on an RBI-groundout.

The Panthers got on the board in the third. Nico Popa led off with an infield single and scored on a one-out triple to right center by Kyle Hess.

Notre Dame responded with another solo homer followed by two more runs on a passed ball and RBI-double in the next inning. The Irish put up another five runs in the following inning on a two-run single and three-run homer, both with two outs.

Pitt produced a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Brock Franks hit a one-out solo homer to right field, his first as a Panther. Ramon Padilla hustled for an infield single, went to second base on a passed ball and came home on a double to left field by Sky Duff.

The Panthers got one more in the seventh. David Yanni and Jordan Anderson were hit by pitches, and Hess singled to centerfield. Franks picked up his second RBI with a sac fly to right center to knock in Yanni.

The last Pitt run came in the eighth. Hess led off with a single up the middle, and Yanni drew a one-out walk. After both advanced on a groundout by Bryce Hulett, Anderson brought home Hess with a single to right field.

Pitt resumes the Backyard Brawl with a home game against West Virginia Tuesday at 3 p.m.

NOTES

Stephen Hansen started on the mound and went 3.1 innings with five runs, seven hits and one walk allowed with one strikeout.
Chase Smith retired all four batters faced with two strikeouts, and Chris Pouliot also retired the side in the ninth inning.
Hess had a team-high three hits.
Duff, Anderson and Franks each collected two hits.
Ron Washington, Jr., Ramon Padilla and Yanni also reached base twice as Washington, Jr. and Padilla each had a hit and walk while Yanni drew two walks.
