
No. 22 Panthers Snap No. 20 Georgia Tech’s Win Streak With Sweep

Panthers Pick Up Ranked Upset of Yellow Jackets
PITTSBURGH – The No. 22 Pitt volleyball team (7-4, 6-4 ACC) snapped an eight-match win streak for No. 20 Georgia Tech (8-2, 8-2 ACC) with a 3-0 sweep of the Yellow Jackets Monday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers earned their third consecutive victory by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-19.
With the win, Pitt is now 10-1 all-time against Georgia Tech, winning the last consecutive 10 meetings. The Panthers are 4-2 against opponents ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll during the 2020-21 season.
Pitt had a well-balanced score sheet, with six Panthers recording six or more kills apiece. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Valeria Vazquez Gomez led the way with a career-high 11 kills on .375 hitting. She added five digs, two blocks and two service aces.
Sophomore middle blocker Chiamaka Nwokolo contributed nine kills on .600 hitting with zero errors, while fellow middle blocker Sabrina Starks posted eight kills and a team-best five blocks.
Junior outside hitter Jordan Lockwood added seven kills, while seniors Chinaza Ndee and Kayla Lund each had six. Lund led Pitt with 13 digs and three service aces.
Redshirt senior setter Kylee Levers led Pitt with 22 assists, while sophomore Lexis Akeo contributed 14. Sophomore libero Ashley Browske recorded 12 digs.
Pitt had the advantage in every category: kills (47-37), hitting percentage (.274-.145), assists (40-35), service aces (6-2), digs (45-42) and blocks (7.0-6.0).
Set One: No. 22 Pitt 25, No. 20 Georgia Tech 19
Following a 5-4 lead by Yellow Jackets, a 4-0 Pitt run put the Panthers in front (8-5). Another 3-0 run by Pitt extended the lead to 12-7, but a 5-1 GT surge cut the Panthers' run to one (13-12). Pitt responded with a resounding 7-0 run to take control of the set, earning a 20-12 lead. The Yellow Jackets held on with a 6-1 run to make it 21-18, but Pitt was able to finish the frame outscoring GT 4-1, capped by a Vazquez Gomez ace.
Set Two: No. 22 Pitt 25, No. 20 Georgia Tech 23
It was a close second frame, with 12 ties and five lead changes. The latest tie was at 22, when the Panthers responded with a 3-1 run to seal the set and go up, 2-1, in a match. A kill by Nwokolo ended the frame with Pitt on top.
Set Three: No. 22 Pitt 25, No. 20 Georgia Tech 19
After surrendering the first point of the third set, Pitt used a 5-0 run to gain a 5-1 lead. Georgia Tech was able to cut its deficit to two at two different instances in the frame (12-10, 18-16), but Pitt was able to stay on top. A 3-0 run put Pitt ahead, 22-17, and outscored the Yellow Jackets 3-2 to finish the match with a sweep. The Panthers' best set in terms of hitting percentage came in the third, at .314.

The Panthers will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a pair of matches. First Pitt will take on host Wake Forest Friday, March 12, at 4 p.m. ET, before competing against NC State Saturday, March 13, at 4 p.m. ET.
