Two Panthers Record Double-Doubles
PITTSBURGH – Two Panthers recorded double-doubles as the No. 22 Pitt volleyball team (6-4, 5-4 ACC) defeated Virginia (2-9, 0-9 ACC), 3-1, Saturday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers claimed the victory by scores of 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17.
Senior outside hitter Kayla Lund recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a match-high 15 kills to go along with 10 digs. Sophomore setter Lexis Akeo posted her third with 18 assists and 11 digs.
Classmate Chinaza Ndee contributed 14 kills, followed by junior Jordan Lockwood, who had the most kills in her Pitt career with eight.
Sophomore libero Ashley Browske picked up 16 digs, and redshirt senior setter Kylee Levers led Pitt with 21 assists. Junior middle blocker Sabrina Starks had a match-high seven blocks.
Pitt had the advantage in kills (50-48), hitting percentage (.204-.112), assists (41-39), service aces (7-6), and digs (60-54). Virginia had the edge in blocks, 9-8.5.
Set One: No. 22 Pitt 25, Virginia 20
Virginia gained an early 9-7 lead following a 3-0 run. The Panthers were able to even the score three times before earning a 15-14 lead, their first since 7-6 earlier on in the set. Pitt pushed its lead to 18-15 after a 3-0 surge, but the Cavaliers were able to cut their deficit to one (21-20) later on after a 3-0 run of their own. From there, Virginia was unable to score any more points as Pitt finish the set on a 4-0 run, capped by a Starks block.
Set Two: Virginia 25, No. 22 Pitt 22
A 3-0 run gave Pitt an 8-5 advantage, which they kept until a 4-0 spurt pushed Virginia ahead, 14-12.
The Cavaliers extended their lead with a 5-2 run to reach the 20-point mark (20-16). Pitt picked up some momentum and cut its deficit to one, down 20-19, but Virginia was able to hold off the Panthers to even the match at one set apiece.
Set Three: No. 22 Pitt 25, Virginia 22
Pitt gained momentum of the set with a 10-1 run to go ahead, 15-6, but Virginia didn't stay far away, using runs of 7-1 and 5-1 to tie the frame at 19. A 4-1 Pitt surge pushed the Panthers to a 23-20 lead, and finally closed the door with a close 25-23 win to go up, 2-1, in the match. Lund had a match-high 11 kills through three sets.
Set Four: No. 22 Pitt 25, Virginia 17
A 6-1 run gave Pitt and 11-7 lead, but UVA did not go quietly, with the Cavaliers tying the set at 16. The Panthers responded with a dominant 9-1 run to end the match with a 3-1 win.
