PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh track and field Head Coach Alonzo Webb was named USTFCCCA 2021 Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year while his son Alonzo Webb III was tabbed as the Mid-Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
This marks the fourth time Webb has earned the Coach of the Year recognition while Webb III earned the honor for the first time in his coaching career. The Panthers duo is one of just two staffs (Oregon) in the NCAA this year to earn the Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year honors.
"Being awarded the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year award is a huge honor that every coach would be proud and humbled by, because it is voted on by the people that you respect the most, your peers," expressed head coach Alonzo Webb. "They understand what this award means, they know that this means that you have a great staff that helped make this possible and athletes that believe in what you are doing to help them achieve their goals."
Webb continues to raise the bar for the Pitt track & field program as he currently has the Panthers ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic Region after their best showing in program history at last week's ACC Championships. Webb helped the Pitt men tie for fourth place, their highest finish in program history, while also securing four podium spots, two individuals and two relays. Pitt also had their first ACC Champion, Felix Wolter, in the heptathlon this season as he set the school record in the event.
The Panthers currently have three athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally while also leading the Mid-Atlantic Region in six events. Wolter and Greg Lauray qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, marking the first time a pair of Pitt athletes will compete in the event in seven seasons.
"This award is extra special to me because my son Alonzo III won his first NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year award," explained Webb. "As a father, I'm really proud of his accomplishments because I see how hard he works and the passion he has for making his student-athletes better. Good luck to him and his two athletes that qualified for the National Championships."
Webb III earned the recognition from his peers for the first time in his coaching career as he helped guide a pair of Panthers to the podium at the ACC Indoor Championships last week. Wolter had his best performance as a Panther which resulted in an ACC Championship in the heptathlon while Lauray notched a second place finish in the high jump.
Under his tutelage, the Panthers jumpers and heptathletes accounted for 21 of Pitt's 48 points at the ACC Championships led by Wolter (10) and Lauray (8). His group had two First-Team All-ACC performers and one Second Team All-AC performer (Kollin Smith), marking the most All-ACC honors in a single season by the jump and multis groups.
"I am honored for being named men's Mid-Atlantic Region Assistant coach of the Year," said Webb III. "It's something that is always a goal and shows that the athletes were able to follow through on all of their hard work they put in during the year. The athletes make these things possible, so this one is for them!"
Wolter and Lauray will close out the indoor campaign for Pitt at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships next week in Fayetteville, AR. Wolter's journey begins on Thursday while Lauray will jump on Friday afternoon as both have their sights set on All-America honors.
