Panthers Split Day One of FAU Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A seven run third inning and a 10 strikeout performance from freshman Dani Drogemuller fueled Pitt to a 9-4 victory over FAU Thursday evening. The Panthers fell to No. 10/11 Kentucky, 8-1, in game one of the FAU Parents Weekend Tournament.
NEWS & NOTES
Kentucky (16-0) scored its first four runs in the top of the first to lead 4-0 early. Senior Morgan Batesole hit a double down the right field line in the bottom of the frame, her fourth of the season, but the Panthers couldn't bring her in.
The Wildcats scored one run in the second and two in the fourth to lead 7-0. Pitt had an opportunity in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and one out, but a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the frame with no damage done.
Pitt added a run (7-1) in the bottom of the fifth, as junior Sarah Seamans hit her third homerun of the season into left centerfield. Kentucky added a run in the top of the seventh and Pitt fell to the Wildcats, 8-1.
Sophomore Kayla Lane finished the game 2-for-2 with two singles, while Batesole went 1-for-3 with a double and walk.
GAME TWO
The Panthers (5-8) jumped to an early 1-0 lead over FAU (3-12) in the top of the first courtesy of junior Katlyn Pavlick's two out RBI double. The double was the first of the season for her.
After a scoreless second, Pitt had its best offensive inning of the season in the top of the third, scoring seven runs on six hits with three extra base hits. Senior Hunter Levesque started the rally with a single to left, bringing in Taylor. Pavlick recorded her second double of the game down the right field line, scoring two runners and making it 4-0. Seamans notched her second homerun in as many games with the next at bat, putting the Panthers up 6-0. Lane kept the offense rolling with a RBI double down the left field line (7-0) and Taylor brought her in with a single up the middle (8-0).
The Owls scored one run in the fifth and sixth inning, cutting the deficit to 8-2. Pitt got one back via a Taylor fielder's choice up the middle, scoring freshman Kaitlyn Burdick. The Panthers led 9-2 going into the bottom of the seventh and won by score of 9-4.
Drogemuller threw a complete game, posting 10 strikeouts for the second time this season. She improved her record to 3-3 on the year. Pavlick finished with 3 RBI on two doubles, while Taylor went 2-for-5 with two RBI, one run and two stolen bases.
Pitt is back in action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. against FIU. They conclude the FAU Parents Weekend Tournament Saturday morning with Illinois State at 10 a.m.
NEWS & NOTES
- Drogemuller threw a complete game against FAU, allowing eight hits, four earned runs but striking out 10 batters. The 10 strikeouts tied a career-high, as she tallied 10 at Mercer last week in Macon, Ga. She now has a team-best 35 strikeouts on the year.
- Junior Katlyn Pavlick went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and a run against the Owls. She is the second player this season to register two doubles in one game, joining classmate Sarah Seamans.
- Seamans went 2-for-6 with two homeruns, three RBI and two runs for the day. She leads the team with four homers and 12 RBI on the season.
- Sophomore EC Taylor stole two bases against FAU. She entered the weekend the nation's leader in stolen bags (12) and now has 14 on the year.
