Lund Records Seventh Double-Double
PITTSBURGH – The No. 19 Pitt volleyball team (13-4, 11-4 ACC) extended its ACC-leading win streak to nine matches with a 3-1 victory over No. 25 Florida State (10-5, 7-5 ACC) Friday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers earned the victory by scores of 25-19, 25-22, 14-25, 25-20. It was Pitt's fourth win against opponents ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 this season. The Panthers are 4-2 in those matches.
Senior outside hitter Kayla Lund earned her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs. Classmate Chinaza Ndee contributed a match-high 15 kills on .343 hitting. Junior middle blocker Sabrina Starks recorded a career-best 11 kills on .588 hitting to go along with two blocks.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Valeria Vazquez Gomez was one kill away from the third double-double of her career, with nine kills and 12 digs.
Setters Kylee Levers and Lexis Akeo had 27 and 19 assists, respectively.
The Panthers had the advantage in kills (57-49), assists (50-46) and digs (51-48). The Seminoles had more service aces (4-3) and blocks (12.0-6.0) and out-hit Pitt, .248-.277.
Set One: No. 19 Pitt 25, No. 25 Florida State 19
The Panthers gained an early advantage with a 6-0 run to start the match. A 3-0 run gave Pitt an eight-point lead (20-12), which included back-to-back blocks from the combination of junior Jordan Lockwood and sophomore Chiamaka Nwokolo. The Seminoles cut their deficit to five points (21-16) following a 3-0 run, but Pitt was able to hold them off and finish the first set with a 25-19 win. The Panthers hit .238 for the frame. Starks led the Panthers with six kills.
Set Two: No. 19 Pitt 25, No. 25 Florida State 22
After surrendering the first point, Pitt used a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead. The Panthers never surrendered the lead again, however, a 5-0 Florida State run tied the set at 19, but Pitt was able to end the frame with a 25-22 win to go up 2-0 in the match.
Set Three: No. 25 Florida State 25, No. 19 Pitt 14
The third set did not go Pitt's way, with the Seminoles using a 19-7 run with seven unanswered points to take full control of the frame. The Panthers were limited to .147 hitting for the stanza while Florida State hit a blistering .542.
Set Four: No. 19 Pitt 25, No. 25 Florida State 20
A 7-1 run swung momentum in Pitt's favor in the fourth set, earning a 15-11 lead which they never surrendered. The Panthers closed out the win with help from seven kills by Ndee in the stanza.
