PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team fell, 7-1, against Syracuse in its home opener Friday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.

NEWS & NOTES

The home contest at Vartabedian Field was the first since May 5, 2019. The Panthers finished 8-12 overall in 2020, but their season was cut short due to COVID-19 and did not play a home game that season.
Pitt fell to 9-15 overall and 4-10 in ACC play.

Syracuse (7-9, 3-6 ACC) opened up the scoring with three runs in the first inning, capped off by a two-run home run by Neli Casares-Maher. The Orange added three runs in the top of the second and led, 6-0.

Pitt scored its lone run of the game in the top of the third, as senior Morgan Batesole brought in redshirt junior Jada Crittendon with a RBI single. The RBI was Batesole's 13^th of the season. Syracuse added one run in the top of the 5^th to lead, 7-1, and held on the rest of the way.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow with a double-header against the Orange. Game one begins at 2 p.m., followed by game two at 4:30 p.m. Saturday's first game will be broadcast on the ACC Network, followed by game two on the ACCNX.
