Panthers Earn Eighth Consecutive Win of Spring Season
PITTSBURGH – The No. 19 Pitt volleyball team (12-4, 10-4 ACC) dominated West Virginia (9-10, 8-8 Big 12) in the first Backyard Brawl since 2011 with a 3-0 sweep Wednesday night at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers were in control from start to finish, winning by scores of 25-8, 25-12, 25-15. Pitt had the advantage across the board: in kills (39-23), assists (37-20), service aces (10-0), digs (30-17) blocks (13.0-4.0) and hitting percentage (.448-.012).
Senior captains Kayla Lund and Chinaza Ndee led Pitt with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. They recorded twin hitting percentages of .688 for the night.
Kylee Levers and Lexis Akeo split setting duties and posted 17 and 15 assists, respectively. Sophomore libero Ashley Browske had a match-high nine digs for Pitt. Junior middle blocker Sabrina Starks recorded a match-high seven blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Cat Flood recorded the first service ace and dig of her career in the match.
BACKYARD BRAWL
Set One: No. 19 Pitt 25, West Virginia 8
Pitt dominated the first frame, gaining momentum with an 11-0 run to gain a 17-5 lead. Freshman Cat Flood saw her first minutes as a Panther and recorded an ace. Pitt ended the stanza with a 25-8 advantage, including six kills from Lund. The Panthers hit .476 in the set and held West Virginia to -.125 from the floor.
Set Two: No. 19 Pitt 25, West Virginia 12
The Panthers picked up right where they left off, using a 7-1 run to pull ahead of the Mountaineers. Pitt used a 6-0 run to reach a double-figure lead, up 19-9. The Panthers ended the frame by outscoring WVU 6-2, including the three final points that featured an Akeo ace to seal it, 25-12.
Set Three: No. 19 Pitt 25, West Virginia 15
It was slower start to the third set, with WVU tying the frame at six with a 3-0 run. Pit answered with a 5-1 run to make it 11-7, and never looked back. The Panthers silenced the Mountaineers with a 7-1 run to end the match with a sweep.

- Pitt holds a dominant 40-2 lead in the volleyball Backyard Brawl all-time series. The Panthers won first 39 meetings, marking the program's longest win streak against one opponent in school history. Pitt's 40 all-time wins against the Mountaineers are tied for the second most against one opponent in the program's history – behind Duquesne (43). Pitt also has 40 all-time wins against Syracuse.
- The win was Pitt's first against West Virginia since Oct. 23, 2009: a 3-0 sweep at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers are 21-0 all-time against the Mountaineers when playing in Pittsburgh. The Mountaineers had won the last two meetings in the series, in 2010 (3-2) and 2011 (3-2), with both contests in Morgantown.
