
No. 19 Pitt Volleyball Earns Sixth Consecutive Win

DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt freshman outside hitter Valeria Vazquez Gomez earned the first double-double of her career in a 3-1 victory for the No. 19 Pitt volleyball team (10-4, 9-4) over Miami (9-5, 7-4) Saturday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Pitt's victory halted a three-match win streak for Miami, winning by scores of 25-17, 19-25, 25-16, 25-20.
Vazquez Gomez's double-double consisted of a career high-tying 11 kills and 10 digs. Senior outside hitter Kayla Lund led Pitt with 12 kills. Senior right side Chinaza Ndee and sophomore middle blocker Chiamaka Nwokolo each contributed nine kills, and junior middle blocker Sabrina Starks had nine.
Starks had a match-high seven blocks. Redshirt senior setter Kylee Levers led Pitt with 25 assists, and sophomore setter Lexis Akeo produced 18. Sophomore libero Ashley Browske had a match-high 17 digs.
The Panthers had the advantage in kills (54-39), assists (50-36), digs (55-40), blocks (9.0-7.0) and hitting percentage (.233-.092). Miami had more service aces (5-3)
Set One: No. 19 Pitt 25, Miami 17
The Panthers used a quick 4-0 run to get out on front. Miami was able to cut its deficit to one point (10-9), but Pitt stayed ahead with another 4-0 run. The Panthers kept momentum and ended the frame by out-scoring Miami, 7-2, to earn a 25-17 win and 1-0 lead. Vazquez Gomez led Pitt with four kills as the Panthers hit a combined .393 for the stanza.
Set Two: Miami 25, No. 19 Pitt 19
Following three early ties, Miami outscore the Panthers 14-3 to gain a double-figure lead of 19-9. Pitt tried to dig itself out of its deficit, cutting the Canes' lead to 23-18 after a 5-0 run, but it was not enough as Miami closed the set with a 25-19 win to tie the match at one frame apiece.
Set Three: No. 19 Pitt 25, Miami 16
Pitt opened up the third set with a 3-0 run, and shortly after the stanza was tied at six. A 6-0 run pushed the Panthers ahead, 12-6. Pitt kept pushing ahead, using a 3-0 run with back-to-back kills from Nwokolo, to earn a 20-12 lead. The Panthers ended the set with a 25-16 advantage, going up 2-1 in the match.
Set Four: No. 19 Pitt 25, Miami 20
The Panthers earned another early, lead, using a 5-0 run to go ahead in the set. Pitt kept momentum and pushed its lead to 20-12 after another 5-0 run. Miami cut its deficit to 21-17 with a 5-1 run, but Pitt was able to close the door, 25-20, and win the match.
