Pitt Splits with No. 18/16 Virginia Tech Saturday

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team split with No. 18/16 Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Park, defeating the Hokies 5-3 in game one and falling 5-0 in game two.
NEWS & NOTES
Virginia Tech (14-4, 9-4 ACC) opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with a RBI single from Cameron Fagan. The Hokies added their second run of the game in the bottom of the second, as Darby Trull hit a single up the middle, making it a 2-0 ballgame.
The Panthers responded with a big fourth inning, scoring four runs off five hits. Senior Hunter Levesque and junior Katlyn Pavlick reached base on back-to-back singles. Junior Sarah Seamans moved Levesque over to third via fielder's choice, and Levesque scored as freshman Cami Compson singled, making it a 2-1 game. Sophomore Kayla Lane brought in Seamans with the next at bat, driving a ball to left field for an RBI single. The game was tied at two all after Lane's hit.
Freshman Jack Busch scored redshirt junior pinch runner Jada Crittendon with a sacrifice fly to right, giving Pitt its first lead of the day, 3-2. Senior LoLo Sanchez hit an opposite field single with the next at bat, scoring Lane and putting the Panthers up 4-2.
In the top of the sixth, sophomore EC Taylor drove in Pitt's fifth run (5-2) of the game with a single, scoring junior Hannah Bach. The Hokies scored one run in the bottom half of the sixth and had a runner on third base, one out, but Edwards forced a strikeout looking and a pop out to end the frame.
Edwards retired the Hokies in order in the bottom of the seventh and secured her fourth win in the circle for the season.
Four different Panthers had a RBI, with Lane finishing 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk. Taylor went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Compson went 2-for-3 for the day. Edwards threw her fourth complete game of the season, giving up seven hits, three earned and striking out five with no walks.
GAME TWO
The Hokies scored three runs in the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead. After a scoreless third and fourth inning from both teams, Virginia Tech added two more in the bottom of the fifth to lead, 5-0. The Hokies held the Panthers at bay the rest of the way.
Batesole finished 1-for-2 with a walk and stolen base.
Pitt concludes its series with Virginia Tech tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Tech Softball Park. Coverage will be held on the ACCNX.

- The 5-3 victory was the first win over a ranked program for Pitt since a 1-0 defeat of No. 13/9 Florida State April 6, 2018.
- Junior Abby Edwards recorded her fourth win and fourth complete game of the season inside the circle.
