NEWS & NOTES
After two scoreless innings, Pitt got on the board first in the top half of the third. Taylor drove in classmate Kayla Lane with a single up the middle to give Pitt a 1-0 lead. Taylor stole second and third during the inning, while Batesole also stole second.
Graduate student Walker Barbee quickly made it 2-0 with a leadoff homerun in the top of the fourth inning. It was the first leadoff homerun for a Panther since junior Katlyn Pavlick against North Carolina Feb. 27, 2020.
Edwards made quick work of the Rockets in the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth, freshman Cami Compson hit a two out single and Pavlick sent her in with a two-run homerun to left field, her second of the season, putting Pitt up 4-0.
A single to left with one out in the sixth broke up Edwards' no-hit bid. After an ensuing single and a reach on error, Toledo had the bases loaded with one away. Edwards struck out the next batter looking on three-straight pitches and a line out to short ended the threat, keeping the shutout intact.
Pitt added an insurance run in the seventh as Batesole continued her offensive surge with a double down the left field line, bringing in Taylor for a 5-0 advantage. Edwards saw the first batter reach base for Toledo in the bottom of the seventh, but a foul out, line out and groundout ended the game.
Edwards' collected three strikeouts and allowed only two hits in 91 pitches thrown. Pavlick went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Compson went 1-for-2 with a run and two walks. The Panthers held the lead until the bottom of the seventh, when the Bears tied it at 1-1 with a solo homerun from Bree Comer. Mercer had runners on second and third and two outs, but Knight forced a groundout to end the frame and force extras.
Pitt answered with a run in the top of the eighth, courtesy of a Batesole sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Taylor (2-1). Freshman Dani Drogemuller relieved Knight in the eighth, but the Bears tied it at 2-2 after a throwing error from a sacrifice bunt scored the runner from second. The game remained tied at two heading into the 12th inning.
Pitt had its chance to score in the top of the 12th, with the bases loaded and one out. Sophomore Bailey Drapola popped out to short and Taylor grounded out to the pitcher and the Panthers left all three runners stranded.
