Pitt Shuts Out No. 9 Florida State 1-0 on the Road in ACC Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Pitt baseball (4-1, 1-0) opened ACC play with a 1-0 shutout of No. 9 Florida State (2-2, 0-1) Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium. Starting pitcher Mitch Myers threw six scoreless innings and a career-high 13 strikeouts with no hits and two walks allowed.
The Panthers picked up their third-ever win over the Seminoles. Two of the victories have come under the guidance of third-year head coach Mike Bell, who led the team to a 10-0 victory over his alma mater and former coaching stop on May 3, 2019 in what was also the series-opener in Tallahassee.
Pitt scored the game's lone run in the fourth inning. Ron Washington Jr. led off with a double down the left field line, and Bryce Hulett knocked him in with a two-run double with one out that was inches away from clearing the centerfield fence.
Jordan McCrum earned his first save with the Panthers and got out of two jams in the last two innings. McCrum came in the eighth inning with a runner on third base and one out. After walking the first batter, McCrum got a pop out to Hulett at first base. After a stolen base and intentional walk to load the bases, he struck out the FSU batter to end the inning.
In the ninth inning, Florida State was able to get runners on the corners with two outs. McCrum got his third strikeout of the inning to end the game.
The two teams' game on Saturday at 8 p.m. will be broadcasted on the ACC Network.
