TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Pitt baseball (5-1, 2-0) earned its first-ever series victory over No. 9 Florida State (2-3, 0-2) with a 7-2 win Saturday night at Dick Howser Stadium. Starting pitcher Matt Gilbertson (2-0) threw six scoreless innings and a career-high 10 strikeouts with five hits and two walks allowed.
Pitt registered its first series-win over a top-10 opponent since joining the ACC for the 2014 season and against a top-25 opponent since beating No. 11 North Carolina twice on May 10-11, 2019.
The Panthers took the lead for good in the second inning. Riley Wash and Brock Franks both drew walks. Jordan Anderson placed a sac bunt down to advance both baserunners, and a throwing error by the catcher resulted in Wash scoring. With two outs, Kyle Hess knocked in both Franks and Anderson with a single through the right side.
Nico Popa hit his second homer of the year to centerfield with one out in the fourth inning. Sky Duff scored on the play and hit a single to right field in the previous at-bat.
In the sixth inning, Popa doubled down the left field line with two outs and then scored on a fielding error on a groundball by Hess.
Pitt's last run came in the eighth inning. Franks led off with a single to right field, went to second base on another sac bunt by Anderson and came home on a single up the middle by Duff.
The Seminoles scored both runs on a two-run double in the eighth inning. With two runners on and one out in the ninth inning, Stephen Hansen struck out the next two batters to end the game.
The Panthers go for the sweep Sunday at 2 p.m.
