GREENSBORO, N.C. —Four University of Pittsburgh swimmers were among the participants at the 2021 U.S. Open Swimming Championships this week at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
"We haven't trained much long course this year, so to see them race to the level they did was exciting," said head coach John Hargis. "They are all competing at a high level for themselves and I am looking forward to what's to come."
Among the Panthers contingent was a trio of juniors – Daisy Anderson, Jerry Chen, and Tatum Detwiler – as well as sophomore Sophie Yendell.
Chen delivered strong performances in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke events, qualifying for the 100 Breaststroke A Final and finishing seventh overall with a time of 1:03.32. In the 200 Breaststroke, Chen dropped three seconds from his preliminary time to swim a 2:21.33 and finish 12th overall.
Anderson finished tenth in the women's 200 Backstroke, securing the second-place finish in the B Final with a time of 2:16.33. Anderson qualified for the C Finals in the 200 and 400 Individual Medley events, touching the wall at 2:20.66 and 4:56.31 respectively. Anderson cut time from Preliminaries to Finals in all three of her individual events.
Additionally, for the Panthers, Detwiler qualified for the women's 100 Breaststroke C Final with a top time of 1:14.41, while Yendell finished in 26.57 seconds in the women's 50 Freestyle C Final.
