
Panthers Fall at Home as UMBC Makes 14 Three-Point Field Goals

PITTSBURGH -- Pitt dropped its second consecutive game as it was unable to overcome a blistering first half shooting performance by UMBC Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. The Retrievers made 11 three-point field goals, including seven in a row at one points, to jump out to a 55-44 lead at halftime.
Pitt made a season-best 11 three-point field goals and John Hugley (21 points, 7 rebounds) and Femi Odukale (19 points, 7 rebounds) combined for 40 points and 14 rebounds but it wasn't enough to keep the Panthers from slipping to 2-4 on the season.
The Panthers got off to the strong start with sophomore guard Femi Odukale leading the way with eight points in the opening four minutes of play. Pitt held a 15-13 lead when Odukale was whistled for his second foul of the half and went to the bench at the 12:45 mark. Following a three-point field goal by Jamarius Burton, UMBC countered with a 20-6 run to take a double-digit led with 8:23 left in the half. The Retrievers knocked down five threes over the next five minutes of game action with Keondre Kennedy and Szymon Wojcik each knocking in a pair.
Pitt turned up its defense in the second half after allowing a season-high 55 points in the opening 20 minutes. Mouhamadou Gueye started an 11-1 Pitt run with a three-point field goal followed by a blocked shot and run out dunk off a perimeter attempt from UMBC. Hugley capped it off is a three-point play to trim the deficit to five at 62-57 with 13:33 remaining.
UMBC countered with a 9-0 run behind five points from Kennedy to regain the double-digit advantage. Pitt continued to chip away and trailed by seven points with 3:53 remaining following a pair of Odukale free throws. The Panthers would get no closer as UMBC went 6-of-6 from the free throws line and got a shot clock beating step-back three-point from L.J. Owens to secure the win.
Hugley went 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 from the foul line en route to his second 20+ points scoring game of the season, while Odukale knocked down a pair of threes and was 7-of-8 from the line in a 19-point effort. Gueye posted a season-high 14 points and went a career-best 4-of-8 from three-point range.
UMBC was led by Kennedy who finished with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-4 from three-point range. Owens also knocked down four threes and finished with 18 points. He entered the contest just 5-of-16 (.313) from beyond the arc.
Pitt returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 30 with a home contest against Minnesota (7 p.m. - ESPNU) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
