Panthers Fall at Home to Vanderbilt

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's basketball team fell, 68-52, to Vanderbilt Wednesday evening at the Petersen Events Center.
Sophomore Femi Odukale led the team with 14 points while shooting 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Freshman Nate Santos scored 11 points and added six rebounds, while senior Jamarius Burton had nine points, two assists and a steal.
Pitt (2-3) and Vanderbilt (4-1) went back-and-forth through the first seven minutes before the Panthers led 14-9 at the 12:15 mark. Pitt held the Commodores without a point for more than six minutes and led 18-11 with 6:06 left to play in the half. Vanderbilt closed out the half on a 13-5 run and led 24-23 at the break.
Pitt tied the game at 26 all less than one minute into the second half before Vanderbilt regained it after Scottie Pippen Jr., layup. The Commodores took a seven point, 38-31, advantage with 13:24 to play, but the Panthers fought their way back and cut it to a one point, 41-40 game with under 10 minutes to play.
Vanderbilt had a stretch of five-straight made three-pointers – including four from Trey Thomas – and led by double-digits at the under four media timeout and for the remainder of the game.
Vanderbilt outshot Pitt 48.1% (25-of-52) to 36% (18-of-50). The Commodores shot 57.7% from the field in the second half, including a 53.9% mark from beyond the arc. Pitt shot a season-best 73.7% (14-of-19) from the charity stripe.
Pitt is back in action at the Pete for the fourth-straight contest Saturday, Nov. 27 vs. non-conference opponent UMBC. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. with live coverage on ACCNX.
