Panthers Defeat UNC Wilmington at Home, 59-51

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's basketball team earned its first victory of the season Tuesday night, defeating UNC Wilmington 59-51 at the Petersen Events Center.
Sophomore John Hugley recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Femi Odukale led all scorers with 15 points, while adding seven rebounds and three assists. Senior Dan Oladapo, who made his first career start in a Panther uniform, registered nine points and five rebounds including four offensive boards, while sophomore William Jeffress finished with seven points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Trazarien White led UNC Wilmington (1-2) with 14 points and seven boards, while Mike Okauru had 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Panthers (1-2) jumped out to an early 8-4 lead after the first media timeout. Pitt took its first double-digit lead of the game (17-6) and led by as much as 15 (32-17) in the first half before going into halftime with a 13 point, 34-21 advantage.
Pitt shot 51.9% (14-of-27) from the floor in the first half and outrebounded the Seahawks 23-10.
The Panthers saw its largest lead of the night at 17 points (38-21) early in the first, but a 9-2 run from UNCW made it a 10 point game into the first media timeout. The Seahawks fought their way back over the course of six minutes to cut it to three (47-44) with ten and a half remaining.
The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the game as Pitt led by as much as seven (54-47) with 7:28 to play. Pitt shot 4-of-5 from the free throw line to close out the game to secure the eight point victory.
Pitt shot 42.9% (21-of-49) from the field and outrebounded UNCW 47-33. The Panthers made just one three-pointer for the contest on four attempts.
