Pitt Tops Towson at Home, 63-59

PITTSBURGH – After trailing by three at half, the Pitt men's basketball team shot 59.1% in the second half en-route to a 63-59 home victory over non-conference opponent Friday night at the Petersen Events Center.
Freshman Nate Santos shot 4-of-8 from three-point range and led the Panthers in both points (14) and rebounds (8). Seniors Dan Oladapo and Jamarius Burton each scored 11 points, while sophomore William Jeffress had seven points, six rebounds, four assists and a block. Sophomore Noah Collier registered seven points, including five in the final five minutes of play.
Towson (2-2) jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage and took a 10-8 lead into the first media timeout. Pitt (2-2) took its first lead (15-14) of the contest at the 9:08 mark, courtesy of an Oladapo layup. The Tigers regained the lead and led by as much as six points (24-18) before Pitt cut it to three (29-26) at the end of the half.
Towson led 37-30 three minutes into the second half, but a Santos three and a Burton jumper quickly made it a two point affair (37-35) with 15 minutes to play. The Panthers took their first lead (41-39) since the first half at the 12:06 mark courtesy of a Collier layup.
Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the contest as the game saw five lead changes over the course of 10 minutes of play. With 2:23 to play, sophomore Femi Odukale hit a three-pointer from the top of arch to put Pitt up 58-55 and an ensuing free throw put the Panthers up four with 59 seconds left. The Tigers cut it to two (59-57), but two free throws from Santos again put Pitt up four (61-57). Towson got within two (61-59) one last time before two free throws from Burton sealed the game.
Pitt shot 59.1% (13-22) from the field in the second half and 44.7% (21-47) for the game. Both teams finished with 36 rebounds, while the Panthers matched a season-best 16 free throws made.
Pitt is back at home Wednesday, Nov. 24 against SEC opponent Vanderbilt. Tipoff is at 9 p.m. on the ACC Network.
